Answer Machine Tape
Festival d’Automne
CONCERT | COMMISSION | TOUR

The new show by composer Philip Venables is created for the pianist Zubin Kanga and refers to the artpiece by David Wojnarowicz, about the time before the death of his close friend, the artist Peter Hujar, from AIDS. Records are at the heart of the creation and the piano symbolize the machine tape of those messages, which are projected on a screen, in a staging by Ted Huffman. Answer Machine Tape, 1987 is this first major work for solo piano, in continuation of Philip Venables’ collaboration with Ted Huffman dealing with the life stories of queer people, offering them visibility and refusing to forget these devastating years.
