Inspired by the Normans

CONCERT | TOUR | RESIDENCY

Music@Malling brings outstanding musicians into the heart of the community with concerts and outreach held in historic venues in and around West Malling, Kent.  Running from the 24th September - 3rd October 2027 contemporary music will be woven through the programme with new commissions highlighting Norman heritage as part of the Year of the Normans. The programme includes a fascinating cross-section of composers from the UK and France; collaborations between Chamber Domaine and Ensemble Variances and a young composers platform involving The Royal Academy of Music, London and École Normale de Musique, Paris creating pieces inspired by our common heritage: highlighting the natural environment; cultural exchange; conflict and resolution; juxtaposing the past with the present. Further events will take place in London, Paris and Normandy.

“I am really excited that Music@Malling will have cultural exchange at its centre in 2027 with new works inspired by the past.  West Malling and its surrounding area have many Norman buildings and a rich history involving England and France.  It is great that this can be expressed through contemporary music in concerts and outreach with new works placed into their historic context with music from across the centuries.”

— Thomas Kemp, Artistic Director - Music@Malling
